Plastics Today: Shift Out of PVC Relies on Proprietary Welding Process

At the heart of a potentially large-scale shift away from PVC in medical applications is a highly proprietary technology that makes it possible to inexpensively weld very thin gauge polyolefin elastomers.

Genesis Plastics Welding showed the latest versions of its ecoGenesis radio frequency (RF) welding technology at NPE2012, but the underlying technology is not new; it was invented in the 1980s by Robert C. Smith, who is the current board chairman of Genesis.

Plastics News: Genesis Plastics Welding adds space, clean rooms in Indiana

Genesis Plastics Welding is investing about $3.3 million to expand, renovate and equip its site in Fortville, Ind.

Medical applications make up about 80 percent of Genesis’ sales.

The contract plastics welder is adding a 2,600-square-foot, Class 7 clean room that will be operational by May, President and CEO Tom Ryder said in an interview. Genesis already has two 1,000-square-foot Class 7 clean rooms.

In October, Genesis completed a 27,000-square-foot addition and upgrades to its original 15,000-square-foot plant, at which time it vacated 13,000 square feet of rented space.

The State of Indiana Economic Development Corp. granted the firm an industrial revenue bond that will provide tax credits based on job creation. The town of Fortville provided a 10-year property tax abatement that decreases on an annual basis.

The firm, which now employs 87, is hiring for engineering, research and development, and prototyping positions.

Ryder said Genesis is looking for 20-25 percent growth in 2013 vs. 2012. That increase will include new opportunities in energy and sustainability markets, he said. He would not disclose sales.

Genesis received certification earlier this year under ISO 13485:2003.

“We appreciate the suppliers and those in material development who have allowed us to explore less-expensive, better-quality materials for product improvements,” Ryder said.

Inside Indiana Business: Genesis Announces New Hires

A provider of contract manufacturing, development and engineering of radio frequency (RF) welded products, Genesis Plastics Welding is pleased to announce the addition of Jon D. Harvey as Sr. Product and Process Development Engineer. With more than 25 years in the engineering industry, Harvey is focused on improving Genesis’ automation and production processes.

“We believe firmly in taking a good process and making it better for our clients,” says Tom Ryder, CEO and president of Genesis Plastics Welding. “Jon’s experience and expertise will help us bring that goal to fruition.”

Harvey holds both an associate’s and bachelor’s degree from Purdue University in Mechanical Engineering Technology. He has worked in the aerospace industry as an experimental product/ process casting engineer for Rolls-Royce as well as an advanced turbine engine design engineer for Allison Advanced Development Company. While there, he was co-awarded two patents for a high-temperature airfoil design.

Genesis Plastics Welding is also pleased to announce the addition of Andrew Kaucher as Product and Process Development Engineer to assist clients in the R&D process. Prior to joining Genesis, Kaucher worked as a Process Engineer for medical device manufacturer Cook Biotech.

“With our recent ISO 13485:2003 certification, Genesis Plastics Welding is extending its reach even deeper into both medical device manufacturing as well as concept-to-commercialization production,” says Tom Ryder, CEO and president of Genesis Plastics Welding. “Andrew’s experience will be a great asset to our clients as we accommodate increasing demand for our RF plastics welding services across numerous segments, especially medical device manufacturing.”

Plastics Today: Genesis Plastics Welding Adds Third Clean Room

View post online.

Genesis Plastics Welding (Indianapolis, IN) recently added a third Class 7 medical cleanroom in response to growing demand for single-use and easy-to-sterilize medical devices.

“Recent national mandates have made infection prevention a leading concern of healthcare providers, creating this increasing need for these products,” says CEO Tom Ryder. “We are in a great position to help supply products to meet those increasing demands.”

Genesis’ has a proprietary RF heat-sealing technology called ecoGenesis that allows assembly of olefin medical plastics that are in growing demand as some hospitals and healthcare systems strive to remove polyvinyl chloride (PVC), particularly in bags and tubing. The ecoGenesis system allows RF welding of very thin gauge (down to 0.001 inch) and low-loss polymers.

“Recent additions to our staff, including engineering experts in product and process development, have enhanced our research and development abilities; we are serving clients from concept to commercialization,” says Ryder.

Genesis manufactures several products including blood pressure cuffs, instrument covers, media reservoir bags, inflatable bladders, hot and cold therapy devices, compression therapy sleeves and coolant bags, and fluid drainage bags.

The company’s technology will be on display at Medical Design & Manufacturing (MD&M) East, June 18 – 20 in Philadelphia, PA

Genesis Plastics Welding is an ISO 13485:2003 certified contract manufacturer providing radio frequency (RF) welding and heat sealing applications of plastic products for military, medical and other industries.
